Mind vs. Machine

The author structures the non-fiction article as a story. For instance,
there is a rising action, climax, and conclusion. The rising action is when
the author is trying to sign up for the competition. The climax is when he
is competing for the Most Human Human Award. The conclusion is when the
author wins the competition. When the author is narrating this he
incorporates research and facts into it. So essentially it is a personal
narrative combined with research. Another story element the author uses is
conflict. In every fiction there is some type of conflict. In this article
the conflict is machines vs humans and the competition.

I do recall the article. I was actually interested when I first read it.
However, I hated the fact that I had to write about it. U of M said that it had
to be processed a week before my orientation or else I wouldn’t be able
to go to my orientation. I had orientation on June 3 so I was in a hurry to finish this essay. The combination of final exams, a math placement exam from U of M, and this 5 page paper made me hate myself.

In a way, I do see it more differently. Because of the college writing
course I have taken I can finally sense the author’s voice and writing
style through his writing.  I can analyze the article much more. Before,
I wouldn’t have been able to do this. If I had this prompt again in
college I would delve much deeper. I’m pretty sure my essay was broad when I wrote it for the self-placement test. Now I would look at a specific point and analyze that one fact or notion. I would find more textual support and be much more concise in my writing.
